Privacy & FERPA

This page covers two things: the federal privacy rights families have in student education records under FERPA, and what this public website collects. We keep website data collection to a minimum and never sell personal information.

Your rights under FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) gives parents and students over 18 years of age (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to the student’s education records. These rights are:

  1. The right to inspect and reviewthe student’s education records within 45 days after the day the district receives a request for access. Submit a written request to the school principal (or appropriate official) that identifies the records you wish to inspect; the school will make arrangements for access and notify you of the time and place.
  2. The right to request the amendmentof records the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate, misleading, or in violation of the student’s privacy rights. Submit a written request that clearly identifies the part of the record you want changed and why. If the district decides not to amend the record, it will notify you of the decision and your right to a hearing.
  3. The right to consent to disclosuresof personally identifiable information in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent (for example, to school officials with a legitimate educational interest, or to another school to which a student is transferring).
  4. The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the district to comply with FERPA. The office that administers FERPA is: Student Privacy Policy Office, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue SW, Washington, DC 20202.

Directory information

FERPA allows the district to disclose appropriately designated “directory information” without written consent, unless a parent or eligible student has told the district otherwise. Directory information is information that is generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if released (for example, a student’s name or participation in school activities).

To confirmList the specific directory-information items the district designates.Supply the EXACT list of items the district designates as 'directory information' (e.g., name, grade level, dates of enrollment, participation in activities/sports, weight/height of athletes, honors/awards, photographs). This must match the district's official FERPA annual notice / Board Policy.

If you do notwant the district to disclose your student’s directory information without your prior written consent, you must notify the district in writing by the deadline below.

To confirmOpt-out deadline and where/how to submit the request.Supply the opt-out deadline (e.g., 'within 10 school days of the start of the year' or a specific date), the exact office/person and address where opt-out requests are submitted, and a link to the opt-out form if one exists.

Student records are handled separately from this website

Student education records — grades, attendance, discipline, enrollment files, and similar information — are not collected or stored through this public website. Those records are managed by the district under FERPA. Contact the district office for anything involving student records.
