Child Find — Special Education

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Ririe Joint School District No. 252 has a duty known as “Child Find” to identify, locate, and evaluate all children with disabilities residing in the district who are in need of special education and related services. This duty covers children from birth through age 21, regardless of the severity of the disability, including children who are homeless, who are wards of the state, and those attending private schools.

Who Child Find serves

A child may be eligible for special education and related services if a disability affects educational performance. Disability categories under IDEA include, among others, autism, deaf-blindness, deafness, emotional disturbance, hearing impairment, intellectual disability, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, specific learning disability, speech or language impairment, traumatic brain injury, and visual impairment. There is no cost to families for an evaluation.
